Opening Day for Ohio Hunters is Approaching.
![]() |
COLUMBUS, OH - September 1 marks the opening day of the fall hunting season, with Ohio hunters taking to forests, fields and waters in pursuit of some of the state’s most popular game, including squirrel, mourning dove and Canada goose.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife predicts hunting for doves and Canada geese will be excellent this year. Squirrel hunting should be good, but is not expected to match last year’s excellent season. Hunters should still see good numbers of gray squirrels. They should be most abundant in the forested hills of eastern and southern Ohio. The outlook for fox squirrels is expected to be above average, with small woodlots adjacent to crop fields and trees near rivers and streams the best locales.
Rail, moorhen and snipe seasons also open on September 1. Teal season also opens on September 1 and runs through September 16.
Hunting is one of the state’s best recreational bargains, with a one-year license for Ohio residents costing just $19. Those hunting waterfowl must also purchase a federal Duck Stamp, along with an Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp, at a cost of $15 each. Federal Duck Stamps are available at many post offices. Ohio licenses and permits can be purchased at any of more than 1,200 license vendors in the state, or online at wildohio.com
Detailed information on these and other upcoming hunting seasons can be found in the 2007-08 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where hunting licenses are sold, online at wildohio.com or by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

Buying Guide: Safes
As your gun collection starts to grow or you accumulate any collection of value, safety and security starts to become more and more of a consideration. An in-home safe can provide the protection you are looking for and the convenience of still having your valuables close at hand.
Safes come in all shapes and sizes. From small metal lockers designed to secure a single handgun or a few pieces of jewelry, to full size safes with nearly 50 cubic feet of storage, there is a safe for every use and every price range. With the ability to select your own interior shelf arrangement in the Heritage line of safes, you can ensure you have safe and secure storage for all you valuable possessions.
Safes come equipped with one of four different locking mechanisms. These are key, mechanical combination, electronic combination, or biometric. A key lock is simply a standard looking key that operates one more locking bars, securing the door to the body of the safe. A mechanical combination lock requires the manual input of a 3 number combination by rotating a dial. An electronic combination lock requires the input of a 3 number combination via an electronic keypad. Finally, a biometric lock can be opened with a fingerprint or with a code entered on a keypad. Once the proper combination is entered in a mechanical or electronic combination lock or the correct fingerprint scanned into the biometric lock, you are able to rotate the handle and retract a series of locking bars.
In addition to protecting items of monetary value, a fire resistant safe can help to protect important documents from fire damage. The typical home fire burns at a temperature between 800º F and 1200º F. Paper will begin to char at approximately 420ºF. Fire resistant safes are rated by how long they are able to maintain an internal temperature below 350º F while exposed to furnace temperatures up to 1950º F. Class II safes will maintain the temperature below 350º F for 30 minutes, Class III for 75 minutes, and Class IV for 90 minutes.
Once you have selected the proper size and configuration safe, there are many accessories available to make your safe function exactly as you need. Many safes can be equipped with interior lights, dehumidification systems, or special racks to hold unusualy shaped items.
Ohio Valley Outdoors offers a full line of safes from various manufacturers. Whether you simply need to secure a few firearms, or you want to safely store several collections and an assortment of family documents, stop by and take a look at our line of Stack On and Heritage safes today.
